Anime is full of dere types, from the well-known Yandere and Tsundere to the lesser-known Himedere and Deredere. These make up the different personalities in anime and mainly affect female characters (though male anime characters aren’t immune to a dere type, they’re just not as common).

So what are the different dere types?

The most well-known one is Yandere, and the character most people immediately think of is Yuno from Mirai Nikki, or Yandere-chan from Yandere Simulator. Yanderes don’t like anyone getting close to the one they love and will do anything to stop someone from taking them away, sometimes going as far as killing their love interest so no one can have them. Yanderes act sweet and cute on the outside, but they will do anything to stay with their loved one. They tend to act obsessively and stalker-like.

The second most well-known dere type is Tsundere, and the character people think of is Taiga from Toradora. Tsunderes act cold and mean on the outside, but deep down they’re sweet and caring. Tsunderes can act violent towards people, which is something that Taiga does a lot and she doesn’t hesitate to beat someone up if they annoy her.

Next is Kuudere, these act unemotional and distant, but over time they’ll slowly open up and show their sweet side over time. They’ll seem cold and uncaring, but they’ll occasionally reveal their caring side. Kuudere are also similar to Tsundere, only less outspoken. An example of a Kuudere is Kanade Tachibana from Angel Beats.

Deredere are characters that show their sweet and energetic side to everyone they meet. Examples of these characters are most moe characters.

Next is kamidere, these are characters that believe they are God, and they act very similar to Tsunderes. They see themselves as being better than everyone else. They may also have god-like powers. An example of this character is Light from Death Note, who has a God complex.

Then there’s Himedere which is Kuudere/Tsundere but too ‘princess’-like to fit into those categories. This is a recently made up dere type.

Dandere are characters that are very shy and sweet. This reminds me of Hinata from Naruto, who’s very quiet and shy, but is very sweet to her friends. A good example of a dandere, besides Hinata, is Yuki Nagato from the Haruhi Suzumiya series.
