I didn’t always like anime. I wasn’t one of those kids who grew up watching anime. Sure I watched the classics like Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon. But who hasn’t. I never really liked anime when I was a little kid. I thought it was weird and different than the rest of the cartoons I watched. I had a couple of friends that like anime and they were ok people. They didn’t really try to get me into anime.
It wasn’t until I reached eighth grade that one of my friends told me try watching anime and reading manga, Before that, I watch Naruto in the English dub only so my exposure wasn’t that high. Still I was wary of starting. But, I met this friend in my public library and he brought me to the manga section of the library and shoved volume 1 of Bleach in my hand and left.
I read it, and I really really liked it. The plot was amazing and so were the characters. I couldn’t check out the rest of the volumes because my library didn’t have volume 2, so I asked my friend what to do. He told me to read it online but this was 2012 and at the time when I was discovering anime, a huge hurricane named Hurricane Sandy hit and I was out of the internet for at least two weeks. I eventually got power back and reading Bleach was the first thing I did.
I even remember that we went to one of my family friend’s house because they got power way before us. And all I did when I was there was read Bleach. I got all the way to chapter 50 ish before I resumed normal life again.
When I met with that friend again, he told me that I could watch the manga in an animated form called Anime. That was the first time I had ever heard of the term. I began watching Bleach and finished the entire thing. From then onwards, I became a huge anime fan. I have watched so much anime and I love it. I have anime posters and figurines. I am president of the Anime Club at my high school. I have learned so much from anime and I can’t imagine my life without it.
