Pokémon Sun and Moon have been out for a while now, so what are the differences between the new gen compared to the previous gens?
Other than the obvious new area, new Pokémon and characters, there are a lot of differences between this game and the previous games in the series.
First of all, there’s no gyms and the elite four consists of the islands’ trial leaders (or whatever they’re called, I can’t remember). I liked this, as every previous game involves beating every gym and the elite four. Sun/Moon was unique, and trials had to be completed instead. Each trial differing from the previous. This made the game refreshing to play, as it didn’t feel like I was replaying every other game in the series but with different characters and Pokémon.
The story wasn’t the same as every other game in the series. Yes, it was similar, but it was very different at the same time. It didn’t revolve around taking down a group that wanted to take over the world. It was more about doing all the trials, and then stopping Lusamine from opening up a wormhole and letting in ultrabeasts.
There’s also the option of going through a wormhole and going into the other gen. Although, this only allowed you to get a cosmog and instead of being night it would be day etc.
There’s no HMs. I love this, but at the same time I miss surf. Surf is probably the only useful HM inside battle. However, there are more positives than negatives about this. I no longer have to worry about having a Pokémon with cut in my team, or rock smash, fly etc. As it’s all accessible by using the pager. This meant that I could pick the Pokémon I want, purely for that Pokémon instead of whether it can learn fly or not.
There’s also the addition of Z-Moves, which are useful. I don’t use them a lot, but they have come in handy when I’ve struggled to defeat someone.
The national dex is absent from this game, meaning that it will be a lot easier to complete the Pokédex. I’m not sure if I like that the National Dex is missing, I hadn’t noticed it wasn’t there until my friend pointed it out when they sent me a Snivy.
Lastly, the main character (you) can talk! You get to choose from various answers, which I loved a lot. I hadn’t realised this until it was pointed out that the MC doesn’t talk in previous Pokémon games.
Are there any differences I missed out? Leave a comment below!
