I’ve seen a lot of anime, so naturally I’ll come across anime I dislike. However, I’ve also found a few popular anime that I haven’t liked, and couldn’t understand what the hype was about. So I’ve made a list. This is based off of my opinion and it doesn’t necessarily mean the anime is bad, I’m just saying I didn’t like it for whatever reason.

  1. Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)

I’m talking about the original 2003 series, not Brotherhood (2009). I watched 13 episodes of this series, before growing bored and giving up. I tried to continue watching it, but I just couldn’t get into it. I felt it was taking too long to actually get anywhere decent (especially compared to Brotherhood, which is definitely so much better). Some episodes were just so boring that I fell asleep while watching them. Brotherhood is so much better, and is one of my favourite anime, so because of this, I still can’t bring myself to try watching it again.

  1. Soul Eater

This anime is hilarious. That alone kept me watching for about 20 episodes. For some odd reason (I have a feeling it was because my phone shut the tab with this anime open down) I stopped watching it and didn’t go back to watching it until a year later. By this point, I was a little confused with what was going on, and I tried re-watching it from the beginning but I just couldn’t get back into it. Which is a shame, because I really enjoyed watching it the first time, it’s just boring to re-watch.

  1. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

I think I watched three episodes of this anime before giving up. The only reason why I started watching it was so I got the references made in Lucky Star. I found Haruhi Suzumiya too annoying for my liking, and I couldn’t exactly tell what the storyline was in the episodes I watched. It seemed all over the place and without a proper direction. If I watch an anime, I like there to be some sort of push storyline wise, rather than the first few episodes solely being on character development. Yes character development is important, but I prefer it to be tied into the storyline, rather than a little bit of character development then storyline. All I got from the first few episodes is that there’s a girl called Haruhi who’s a bit crazy and a handful, who makes a club up and forces the main character to join. Then the quiet girl says she’s an alien or something. This was over the span of three episodes. Damn, an episode would have drawn me in better rather than it being dragged out over three. Maybe I would have stuck around if it actually had a character I liked, as stated somewhere above: I find Haruhi annoying and the other characters seemed rather plain. The quiet girl was sort of interesting, but she was quite boring too.

I see so much hype surrounding this anime, so I really was expecting great from the first episode (which was okay for a first episode, not amazing but not awful). Maybe that’s why I just couldn’t get into it. If someone could convince me that the anime really is great to watch, maybe I’ll try watching it again.

  1. Your Lie in April

So many people said this anime is so great. I didn’t think so. I watched two episodes, and like Haruhi Suzumiya (but worse) I got bored very quickly. Nothing happened in the first two episodes (except a five minute concert – which isn’t much in the span of fortyish minutes. More happened in the opening than the anime itself). I spent a lot of time waiting for something to happen, and by the time I reached the end of the second episode I decided I couldn’t be bothered to watch it because it just wasn’t appealing at all. I even asked my little brother if it improved and he said no, so I most likely won’t go back to watching it. Anyway, thanks to the lovely internet – I had it spoiled shortly after so now I definitely don’t feel the need to watch it.

  1. Boku No Hero Academia/ My Hero Academia

I actually watched the majority of this anime before I gave up. I’ve also already written a review which goes more into depth on the anime. I enjoyed this anime for the first few episodes, it had so much potential to be great, but after a few more episodes I realised it wasn’t really going anywhere and I grew bored. It also didn’t help that I was watching Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress at the same time, which is a lot better in comparison in my opinion.
