An ongoing problem within the anime community is people not supporting the anime industry by watching anime for free online. However, supporting anime creators is a little difficult for those who don’t have a lot of money.

I say yes, you should try to buy anime box sets when you can, but there are plenty of other ways you can support the anime industry, because sometimes anime box sets aren’t easy to buy depending on where you live. So obviously it’s understandable if this isn’t possible.

I personally don’t use Crunchyroll, I don’t have a lot of money so using the site is very difficult when I only have a free account. I do try my best to support the anime industry though, as I will buy box sets when I can.

Crunchyroll is a cheap way to support anime creators, since you don’t have to pay anything. As long as you don’t mind being harassed to buy premium and getting ads whenever you view an episode. I’m pretty sure premium isn’t that expensive either.

I have to admit; anime box sets can be quite expensive. Today I was in HMV and I found a Naruto box set that was £45, which is very expensive in my opinion. But not all anime box sets are expensive, it is possible to buy them for a very cheap price. It really depends on the series, since I paid £10 for Panty and Stocking and Ouran High School Host Club. Anime DVD films are even cheaper, I bought The Girl Who Leapt Through Time for £3.99 today.

Since I don’t have a lot of money to spend (I’m a college student), I rarely buy box sets and I only buy box sets for anime I’ve already seen (unless they’re really cheap, like Panty and Stocking). How much I’ll spend on a box set varies too, from the series itself to how many episodes it has. I wouldn’t pay £50 for an anime series with 12 episodes but I would pay £50 for both seasons of Code Geass (which has 50 episodes in total).

I really do try my best to buy box sets when I can.

If you face the same problem I do, then manga is a cheap alternative. Manga is a lot cheaper to buy, which is why I have a lot more manga compared to anime box sets. However, this only supports the mangaka, and not the anime studios.

Anime merch is another good alternative, as long as it’s official.

I think that if box sets were more easily accessible, and cheaper to buy then I’d probably purchase a lot more. It’s very difficult to support a series if it doesn’t have a DVD release where you live. I know the third season of Black Butler has yet to be released in the UK, which makes watching it very difficult (I’m not sure if it’s available on Crunchyroll). Also, not every series is dubbed, and not every series is on Crunchyroll, so sometimes you have to watch a series on a free streaming website.
