Ahhhh, the Olympics. The quad-yearly sporting event that most people watch just for the shits. Hosted in a plethora of countries like Russia, America, Canada and more, the Olympics provide people with top quality sporting events with athletes all around the world competing for the title of the best. The best like no one ever was. You get my point. But the next Olympic is going to be different. Why you ask? Because the 2020 Olympics are going to be held in Tokyo, Japan. Why does that matter? Since it is going to be held in Japan, the 2020 Olympics are going to be heavily influenced by anime.
Characters like Goku, Sailor Moon, Luffy, Naruto, Astroboy, Shin-chan, Jibanyan and others are going to be featured in exclusive 2020 merchandise for the 2020 Olympic games. It’s no surprise that the Olympics would feature such popular icons of Anime Culture. These prominent characters are known to mostly all those who have had a single encounter with the medium.
What is surprising is the lack of certain Nintendo icons such as Mario or Pikachu. It seems that they could benefit by partnering up with Nintendo to produce exclusive 2020 Tokyo Olympics Merch with the face of gaming that everyone knows. While there is still ample time left before the Olympics, the world is still wondering, where is our stereotypical Italian plumber that we all know and love.
