There are so many anime films, but what films should you see? I decided to create a list of must-see anime films. This is obviously my own opinion, but I have considered what I’ve heard other’s say about these films and how popular they are in the anime community.
1 Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name)
This film is insanely popular, and you should really consider watching it. It’s amazing. The story, characters and animation is fantastic and it’s definitely one of my favourite anime films.
Kimi No Na Wa is about two teenagers. Mitsuha, a girl who lives in the country, and Taki, a boy who lives in the city, exchange bodies. They swap, and then swap back. This repeats. It’s incredibly confusing at first, but as the film progresses pieces slowly fit together.
2 My Neighbour Totoro
This film is a classic, and Totoro is the icon of Studio Ghibli. It’s definitely worth watching, even if you’re not into anime films.
My Neighbour Totoro is a film about two girls and their father who move to a new house in the countryside. While Satsuki is at school, Mei goes out exploring. She stumbles upon Totoro and the adventure begins…
3 Spirited Away
This film was the highest grossing anime film, until Kimi No Na Wa was released. It’s another brilliant Studio Ghibli film that is definitely worth watching.
Spirited Away tells the story of Chihiro, who is moving to a new house with her parents. They try to find a shortcut to their new house but stumble upon an abandoned village. The parents then end up eating lots of food and turn into pigs, and Chihiro is pulled into the spirit world.
4 Wolf Children
It’s difficult to get into this film, but once you’re past the beginning it’s very, very good. This film has one of the best character developments I have ever seen.
Wolf Children is about a university student who meets a strange man. They end up falling in love and he reveals that he’s actually a wolf. She discovers she is pregnant, and then ends up pregnant again shortly after. However, these children aren’t ordinary children and are wolf children (hence the title). They go from being wolves to normal children in a matter of seconds.
5 The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
I love everything about this film. It is my favourite. It’s hilarious. It tells its own spin on time leaping in such an amazing way.
This film is about Makoto Konno, who somehow receives the power to jump back in time. However, she must leap to do so. After gaining this power, she begins to use it to improve her grades and fix problems. Obviously, this ends up having a nasty effect in the future, as all actions have consequences.
So, that concludes my list of must-see anime films. They’re all very good and I highly recommend you watch some of them.
