You’ve most likely heard of the term ‘shipping’, since it’s commonly used a lot within several fandoms. From my knowledge (which may not be correct) the term originated from Tumblr (which shouldn’t surprise anyone). Shipping is where a fan likes two characters together, and wants to see them end up in a relationship together. This term affects most, if not all, fandoms.
In addition to ships, fans also have OTPs which stands for (correct me if I’m wrong) ‘one true pairing’. So basically their favourite pairing. For example, one of my OTPs is Tohru and Kyo from Fruits Basket. Not everyone will agree with this ship.
Ships don’t just include straight boyxgirl ships, they also include boyxboy and girlxgirl. Although, I come across boyxboy ships a lot more frequently than any other (maybe because I really like yaoi). The most common ship I see is LxLight, which isn’t something I ship completely. I ship it, but at the same time I don’t because it just seems so wrong.
However, not every fan has ships. Some people have a few, and then some people have loads (I definitely have loads, I ship anything if it’s cute).
In addition, due to ships being very opinionated, they cause a lot of arguments in fandom communities. From fans attacking mangakas for their ships not sailing, to starting fights with other fans for not liking their pairing. It can get pretty crazy.
From my own personal experience, the Bleach fandom is probably the worst in the anime community. Fans went as far as burning their manga due to their favourite pairing not ending up together (which is pretty stupid, in my opinion). This is why I have several ships, some including people who I ship with others (example: ByakuyaxRenji and RenjixRukia), chances are, if characters end up together I won’t be left feeling disappointed.
(I don’t know who would burn manga, they must be very crazy. I don’t even want to know how much money they spent on it to just end up burning it).
It’s probably wise to respect people’s ships, you never know if they’ll turn into Yuno if you insult their favourite pairing.
Futhermore, some anime fuel ships, especially Free! Which seems to just be shipping. Or Fire Emblem: Awakening (not anime, but it’s a game) which is literally a game about shipping. It’s unavoidable, so chances are you ship something without realising it.
