There are some good Slice of Life anime, but they’re pretty uncommon for me to find. I struggle to enjoy anime that’s slice of life because to be honest, I’m really into action. I prefer to watch something that is very story-driven over something that is purely character-driven. Don’t get me wrong, I will enjoy a slice of life anime as long as it has some sort of storyline that is good enough to keep me watching. I don’t really enjoy anime that seems to have no direction as every episode has it’s own storyline that isn’t carried over into the next episode, and the only thing that does carry over is the character development that has occurred.

I’m just not a big fan of slice of life. However, my favourite anime (Fruits Basket) is slice of life but the story is really interesting, as well as I enjoy watching all the characters grow. So it’s not like I avoid slice of life anime, I will watch it but I just don’t always finish the series.

An example of a slice of life anime I didn’t enjoy was School Rumble as it didn’t really have anything special about it. I found it boring and gave up when I realised the second episode was going to be pretty much the same as the first. I didn’t find any of the characters extremely likeable enough to persevere either so I ditched the series very quickly.

I loved Kimi Ni Todoke, because there was just something about it that made me continue watching it. Overall, I’m really fussy when it comes to slice of life anime. I don’t avoid anime that is slice of life, but if I had the choice between an action or slice of life, I would most likely pick the action (unless the story for the slice of life anime sounds better).

In addition, slice of life can be mixed with other genres, and it really depends on what genre it has been mixed with. Some combinations work really well and then others don’t. So this genre is really difficult to say for a definite whether I like it or hate it. It’s not like ecchi when I can pretty confidently say that I dislike it.

My favourite combination has to be slice of life and romance, most of the time I’ll enjoy it as long as it has some sort of storyline to go with it. I’m still quite fussy about whether I like it or not, as it has to have decent characters, decent story, some sort of continuation and it has to actually lead somewhere. I won’t enjoy a romance slice of life if the characters are annoying, there’s no ongoing storyline, character development is lacking, and it seems to not be getting anywhere.
